When re-doing an upholstered chair, I never like to spend more than $15. The reason for this is that fabric can get pricey. I try my best to shop the sales, and use coupons, but never spend more than $10 a yard unless you're fixing up a King Louis chair (those deserve velvet!).
What you want to look for in a good chair is the padding. Replacing busted padding is also $$. Look for chairs that also have easy access to the padding and unscrew in a way you think you can handle. Most times I make my husband do it as in pic four below.
